大西洋有一条中洋脊(Mid-Ocean Ridge)，位於3500公尺的海面下，长度有6万4千多公里，宽度有800公里。中洋脊的热液喷口，喷涌出含有矿物质、金属的热水。在喷口的附近有将近240倍的大气压力，温度的变化从摄氏2度到400度，在这不可能有生物存在的地方，却发现了奇妙的动物以此为家。例如：在高温且高毒性的硫化氢环境中，“爱文号”发现了类似拖把状“庞贝虫的环节动物”(Alvinella)在我们看来严峻的环境中来去自如。
深海的火山系统，就像似烤箱的热源，它将地壳及海水加热，同时释放出营养盐(Nutrients)当作许多深海生物的食物来源。
深邃漆黑的海底，就像浩瀚无穷的宇宙一般，吸引著我们人类的注意力。深海的景观是如此神秘与奥妙，这不仅使科学家重新思考有关生命的课题，也促使我们对外太空有生命的存在抱有希望。
