A Better Tomorrow (Chinese: 英雄本色; Mandarin Pinyin: Yīngxióng běnsè; Jyutping: Jing1 hung4 bun2 sik1; literally "True Colors of a Hero") is a 1986 Hong Kong action film which had a profound influence on the Hong Kong film-making industry, and later on an international scale. Directed by John Woo, it stars Chow Yun-fat, Ti Lung and Leslie Cheung. Although the movie was made with a tight budget and was relatively unknown until it went on screen due to virtually no advertising, it broke Hong Kong's box office record and went on to become a blockbuster in Asian countries. It is highly regarded, ranking at #2 of the Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures. Its success also ensured the sequel A Better Tomorrow 2, also directed by Woo, and A Better Tomorrow 3: Love & Death in Saigon, a prequel directed by producer Tsui Hark.

John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow II sees Chow Yun Fat and Ti Lung return to familiar territory with blazing guns, explosive action and superb high-octane choreography in this sequel to the seminal Hong Kong action flick.
Former criminal, Tse-Ho (Ti Lung) is set free from his incarceration in jail to assist in the investigation of his former crime boss, Lung (Dean Shek), who is suspected of running a counterfeit operation. Though initially refusing, he only agrees so he can keep a close eye on his cop brother Kit (Leslie Cheung), who is working undercover to infiltrate Lung’s organization.
After Lung is framed for the murder of a rival gang leader, he turns to Tse-Ho, who helps him escape to New York where he is joined by Ken (Chow Yun Fat), the equally deadly twin brother of the deceased Mark. Returning to Hong Kong to rejoin Tse-Ho and Kit, they soon discover the true mastermind behind the entire operation, and in true John Woo fashion, set out to take him down.

Director Tsui Hark takes the reigns from John Woo in a prequel to the much revered film series with A Better Tomorrow III.
Set during the Vietnam War, Mark (Chow Yun Fat) travels to Saigon to join his cousin Mun (Tony Leung Ka Fai), just as he gets out of jail. Using a contact in the Vietnamese army, the two soon start trafficking black market weapons with a beautiful female assassin named Kit (Anita Mui).
After a deal goes horribly wrong, they all flee to Hong Kong where Kit’s feelings for Mark grow. However, Mark is aware of Mun’s strong feelings for Kit, leaving the three in a complicated love triangle. Making matters worse is the return of Kit’s former lover Ho, a crime boss who doesn’t take too kindly to Mark and Mun’s advances on Kit. After attempting to the kill the two cousins, a new war begins between Mark, Mun, and their new adversary, Ho.
