内容介绍 : | Chiu Sau-shan is an auditor of a government department who refuses to go along with his colleagues in "get-rich-quick" corruption schemes. His small salary is barely enough to feed his family and because of this, Sau-shan often gets into arguments with his wife. When his youngest son, Chiu Kin, falls ill, a sum of money is needed for medical care. Sau-shan's daughter, Kwai-ching, becomes a prostitute to earn the money. This becomes known to Sau-shan's supervisor, Mr. Wong. Chief Wong has long been attracted by Kwai-ching and thus forces his attention on her. The neighbour Tsui Chit-chi is secretly in love with Kwai-ching and is willing to marry her even though she has sold her body. However, Kwai-ching rejected his proposal. When Sau-shan finds out about her daughter, bitterness and anger compel him to join the corrupt scheme cooked up by his boss, thinking that he will bring wealth and stability to his family. However, things go wrong and Sau-shan ends up in jail. When Kwai-ching goes to talk to Chief Wong in a plea to help her father, Wong is unmoved and instead takes advantage of her. Kwai-ching stabs Wong to death. Before a tearful kwai-ching leaves under arrest, she entrusts her two brothers to the faithful Tsui Chit-chi. (Based on viewing the film.) |

备注 : | Film review, 'The film captures the central theme of contemporary history, ie the predicament of intellectuals belonging to the petty-bourgeois class because it over-elaborates the theme of the corruption of the old society and as it failed to create fresh characterisations in the characters of Tsui Chit-chi and the son, Chiu Kin' (Chow Chit, Ta Kung Pao, 1948/11/13)Film review, 'The film exposes a corrupt system and how people live under such a system the author describes the 'changes' of his two protagonists (Chiu Sau-shan and Chiu Kwai-ching) but in the process, does not bring out their inner contradictions' (Chow Ying, Wah Sheong Daily, 1948/11/ 13) |
