内容介绍 : | Upon the death of Emperor Tongzhi, the Empress Dowager Cixi installs the four-year old Guangxu as Tongzhi's successor and assumes rulership "behind the curtain." Having spent years under the supervision of Cixi, Guangxu fears her so much that he takes his beloved Zhen, second daughter of the Board President, only as a concubine. After their marriage, Cixi becomes jealous that Guangxu is relying more and more on Concubine Zhen. Thus the Empress and Concubine are at loggerheads. Meanwhile, the eunuch Li Lianying, in order to please Cixi, diverts funds from the navy to build the summer palace to be dedicated to Cixi on her birthday. The diverted funds weaken the navy, leading to a defeat in the 1894 Sino-Japanese War. Feeling the disaster of defeat, Emperor Guangxu employs the services of reformers Kang Youwei and others. However, Cixi is displeased and forces Guangxu to order the execution of Kang, who escapes, with the help of Concubine Zhen. Guangxu then plots a grab for power, relying on Yuan Shikai's help, but Yuan betrays him. The emperor and his concubine are imprisoned. The foreign powers invade Beijing to fight the Boxers. Cixi orders the killing of Concubine Zhen as she makes her escape. When informed that Concubine Zhen is dead, Guangxu is despondent and griefs as the country collapses around him.
