内容介绍 :	A local despot Mr Chin craves pretty Mui Yee-man and openly flirts with her at a temple festival. A youth Chow Sze-wan is indignant at Chin's move. He steps forward to protect Yee-man. As a result, Yee-man falls in love with Sze-wan, but Chin buys off Yee-man's father, Mui Sam-chun, who agrees to let his daughter marry Chin. In fact, Sze-wan is Yee-man's long lost cousin and a marriage pledge has long been made for the couple. He has come back to ask for Yee-man's hand in marriage but is violently ejected by Sum-chun from the house. Thus, Sze-wan and Yee-man, encouraged by a maid Chau-lin, decide to elope. However , the lovers are betrayed by another maid Chun-to who informs Chin of the elopement. That night, the couple are ambushed by Chin's gang who beat Sze-wan mercilessly. He is abandoned in the mountains but is saved by some monks. Sze- wan decides to turn to monkery and seclude himself from the secular world. After the incident, Chau-lin commits suicide by jumping into a well. Yee-man is dejected by the loss of her lover; she gives birth to a daughter during a stormy night. Chun-to informs Sam-chun of the child's birth. Sam-chun attempts to kill the baby but Yee-man flees with her baby. During the struggle, Yee-man and her baby fall into a river and are feared drown. A grave is built to remember her. Sze-wan learns of her death and comes to mourn before her grave and is surprised to find Yee-man and daughter alive. A fragile Yee-man hands the baby girl to Sze-wan, collapses and dies. Sze-wan kills Mr Chin and embarks on a drifting life with the baby girl. Twenty years later, residents hear the Recording of a bell rung at midnight. This is the daughter's filial attempt to recall the spirit of her mother back to earth .
