内容介绍 :	Young writer Cen Mo returns to Shanghai from Chongqing after the war. The writer sees his old friends Jiang Mulan and Gao Jimei, and comes across Ah Cui and her dying mother. Cen Mo bears witness to the tragedies of these families. Mulan's father Ren'an, has been a close associate with Jimei's father, Panlong. With the help of Ren'an, Panlong wins a scholarship to study in Germany when he was young . Panlong returns to China a rich man, and established a cotton mill, employing Ren'an as manager. During the war, the mill is destroyed, and it was only re-established with funds canvassed by Ren'an. However, Panlong betrays Ren'an for the sake of self-interest, eventually forcing the shareholders to sell their shares at a cheap rate, bringing about the bankruptcy of Ren'an who sold all his properties to compensating the shareholders for their loss. Relations between Panlong and Ren 'an deteriorate to the extent that both of them oppose the match between his daughter Mulan and Jimei. The lovers decide to leave their homes and live together. However, Jimei is too weak to resist his father and becomes associated with Miss Gong from an influential family, leaving Mulan heartbroken. After befriending Ah Cui, Cen Mo learns that she is actually Panlong's daughter born from a relationship with a woman during his student days in Germany. Having exploited the relationship to obtain funds from the woman's father, Panlong abandons the woman and her baby. Finally, Ah Cui is received into the Jiang family. Cen Mo brings Mulan home to her father, leading to the reconciliation between father and daughter. (Extracted from the film novel)
