内容介绍 :	Wong Hok-yin is an idealistic schoolteacher but straitened circumstances force him and his wife Wai-bing to make hard decisions. Son Wong Chung is forced to stop his studies in school. Instead he teaches in a night school for lowly citizens. Eight-year-old daughter Wong Ching is given to Hok-yin's brother Chung-ho, while the neice Siu-ling who stays with Hok-yin is forced to work as a servant girl in the home of Fong Kwong- chung, Hok-yin's old friend. Kwong-chung is a member of the school board but his son, Yiu-tso, is disciplined by Hok-yin for abusing a girl classmate. In addition, Wong Chung gets into an altercation with Mrs Fong over Siu-ling's education. Angered by these events, Fong Kwong-chung uses his influence to have the night school terminated and Hok-yin fired from his position. Wong Chung-ho is killed in a work accident. Wai-bing pleads for assistance from Kwong-chung but is rejected. With donations from workmates, enough money is found to hold Chung-ho's funeral. A disconsolate Hok-yin contemplates suicide by jumping from the Pearl River Bridge but is stopped in time by his son who was searching for his father to tell him that the neighbours want to reopen the night school. Moved by the children's innocence, Hok-yin decides to start life anew and devote himself to education. (Extracted from the film brochure.)
