In the film , the mother does not cross the bridge to meet her lover, but to meet her husband who has become a monk. The husband, Wan Man-si, has killed a man in vengeance. He then becomes a monk at the Wah Lam Temple, leaving behind his wife to bring up their son alone. Several years later, the wife meets her husband at the temple. Now devoting himself to a life of monkhood, the husband has no intention of returning home. So, the wife crosses the river to the temple every night to visit her husband.
