内容介绍 : | Wai-man, a poor young scholar, falls in love with his neighbor So-wah. Wai-man's mother and Uncle Sau, So-wah's foster father, encourage Wai-man to go to the capital and join the imperial examination, so that he might be an official and able to keep a family. Wai-man does succeed in the examination and wins the title of the No.1 Scholar. A high -ranked minister wants to marry his daughter Yuet-wah to him, but he declines politely. But the Minister keeps him in his mansion, saying that the marriage is proposed by the Emperor whose will is not to be disobeyed. Another young man Man- tung, a cousin brother to Yuet-wah, has long been admiring her. Though he has won the title of the Second Best Scholar, he feels extremely sad when he knows that Yuet-wah is to wed somebody else. Wai-man tells Man -tung that he has no intention to rob him of his love and that he loves only So-wah. On the wedding day, Wai-man pretends to become an idiot, scaring the Minister and Yuet-wah so much that they have to delay the wedding ceremony. Uncle Sau and So-wah, pursuing the missing Wai-man, arrive at the mansion. The Minister offers them a lot of gold and silver as exchange for their agreeing to cancel the early engagement between Wai-man and Yuet- wah. But, Yuet-wah asks to meet Wai-man for the last time, which the Minister agrees. To everyone's surprise, So-wah and Yuet-wah look perfectly alike. Even Wai-man cannot tell the difference between them, causing many laughable and amusing scenes. It turns out that So-wah and Yuet-wah are twins, separated early because their parents were too poor to raise them. So-wah tells her story to Yuet-wah, and Yuet-wah asks her foster parents about their attitude. The Minister and his wife, though not their parents of blood, accept them as their own children and welcome them to share the wealthy and happy life of the household. Now, Wai-man, no more an idiot, marries Sou wa while Man-tung takes Yuet-wah as his dearly-loved wife. |
