内容介绍 :	The story takes place in the kitchen of a pre-war building at the time of water rationing in 1960s Hong Kong. Eight families are cramped inside an old flat as small as a pigeon cage. Among the tenants are the landlord and his wife, a teacher, a taxi dancer, a broker, a laundry woman, and a carpenter. Rows constantly break out over the nitty-gritties of everyday life such as water supply and electricity bill. The small kitchen is crowded with cooking utensils and kerosene stoves. At the cooking rush hours, all the tenants are crowded together, fighting for a space to prepare their meals on time. It seems that the only way to get the job done is by yelling and shouting at rival tenants. When the landlord announces an increase in rent, the tenants first protest by blaming the others for consuming more energy and arguing that they should pay a bigger share of the bill. However, conflicts and quarrels all give way to water collection. As soon as the time comes, everyone drops whatever they are doing and attends to collecting the one thing that is essential for life - water. The troubles arising from the crowded living conditions seem never ending. Scenes like this are shown repeatedly. Somebody litters the common areas and the rubbish is swept back into the offender's room. Hungry children steal some food and others are accused of the theft. Somebody takes another's food or collects their laundry by mistake and gets scolded. Somebody falls and somebody knocks something down. Somebody loses his job, somebody gives vent to their feelings, and somebody tries to make peace. It seems the only way for people to let off the steam caused by the frustration in their lives is to yell and shout. Until one day, in the middle of the yelling and shouting, the kitchen catches fire. Miraculously, people put aside their hostilities, their differences and their grudges, and realise that they are all in the same boat with the common goal of putting out the fire. The fire gives everyone a wake-up call to learn the value of mutual support in times of crises.
