内容介绍 :	Mrs. Lee, nee Choi and her two children, an older girl, So-kam, and a younger son, Siu-keung, are very close. The family is poverty-stricken and Mrs. Lee is seriously ill. The family needs money to pay the mother's medical bills and the younger brother's travelling expenses to sit for the national exam in the capital. In the midst of these difficulties, a rich man Lau Lai-yuen, shows an interest in Kam and proposes a deal; in exchange for providing financial help to the family he will take Kam as his concubine. She has no alternative but to agree. However, Lau's wife, Ngai, resents this arrangement and, out of jealousy, vents her feelings on Kam, beginning to torture her without respite. Ngai frames Mrs. Lee for the murder of her maid. Suddenly, Lau becomes insane and drowns himself in a river. After her husband's death , Ngai conspires with her adulterous lover to bribe a corrupt official to convict Mrs. Lee in the murder case, as a result of which she ends up in prison. As a youthful prodigy, Keung is capable yet not quite old enough to sit the national exam. However, he wants to waste no time and therefore, under the name of Chui Tak-ko, he hides in a relative's robe to get inside the examination hall to take the exam. His exam answer is so brilliant that it attracts the examiner's , that is, the Emperor's, attention. He is invited to demonstrate his brilliance by writing impromptu in the emperor's court, amazing all the courtiers with the high level and style of his writing. Keung is therefore officially recognised and accorded the exceptional title of No . 1 laureate. In the meantime, a barbarian diplomat, who is receiving an audience, tries to outwit his hosts and stir up trouble with the intention of embarrassing the Emperor's court. However, the young laureate tactfully outsmarts him by making intelligent replies to prove the Emperor right and save the state's honor. The young scholar is therefore accredited and assigned to preside over the Court of Appeal which is hearing Mrs. Lee's murder case, along with a high ranking official, Chiu. In the course of the trial, as Keung does not want his mother to find out his identity until the trial is over, he asks her to keep her back to the court throughout the entire trial. Keung successfully uncovers Ngai's adultery and the local official's corruption. Finally justice is done and the evil parties are convicted.
