内容介绍 :	Pak Oi-lin marries Wai Chiu-sheung during the Sino-Japanese war and tries hard to be a good wife. Knowing his son has opted for Lin instead of marrying a rich girl, Sheung's father makes it a habit to give Lin a hard time. Fortunately, her mother-in-law is a reasonable person, and life is tolerable. Life has become difficult and Sheung is unemployed . That makes Lin's father-in-law dislike her all the more. Sheung borrows money from his cousin, Yuen-bing, and tries to smuggle goods to the hinterland with his good friend, Cheung. Before he leaves, Sheung asks Bing to take care of his family, especially his pregnant wife. On the way, Sheung saves the life of a very sick Mong-yuk. The boat they are on is hit and capsizes, but they are saved and detained in the hinterland. Meanwhile Sheung's family thinks he is dead. Lin takes up the responsibility of caring for her in-laws, and so works at Bing's shop. Feeling Bing is up to something, Lin quits her job. Her father-in-law gives her a hard time for not bringing money home. To support the livelihood of the two old people, Lin secretly works as a maid at the brothel operated by Seventh Aunt. However, Seventh Aunt conspires with Bing and tries to force Lin to become a prostitute. Since she will not give in no matter how hard they try, Seventh Aunt fires her. Later on, her father-in-law is beaten to death for not being able to repay a gambling debt, and her mother-in-law dies of an illness . Lin gives birth to a daughter, Cheuk-lin, and moves to a new place.
