内容介绍 : | The elder of the Lau brothers, Chi-kei loves gambling. His wife Sau-ying is peremptory and wicked. They have no children. The younger brother Chi-man is amiable and filial towards his parents. His wife Yeuk-lan is educated and has good manner. They have three sons and two daughters. Their mother dies of sickness. Sau-ying instigates Chi-kei to seize the family properties. They first separate Chi- man from his family, then torture Yeuk-lan and her children. They frame Yeuk-lan by saying that she is not loyal to Chi-man and has been making advances to Chi-kei. Chi-man misunderstands Yeuk-lan and drives her away. Lan feels wronged, and drowns herself in a river. Her five children come, but she has vanished. There is only a handkerchief left. The children bury the handkerchief and make a grave in memory of their mother. Chi-man comes and he is filled with sorrow. Sau-ying gangs up with the second granduncle, and put poison in the sweet dumplings and intend to kill Chi-man, so that they can get all the family properties. However, Chi-kei eats the sweet dumplings and dies. Sau-ying says it is Chi-kei who has killed his brother and she reports to the local authorities. Chi-man confesses under torture and he is sentenced to death. The five children are driven away by Sau-ying and they become beggars. Fortunately their teacher helps them and they can appeal to the imperial inspector. The truth comes to light at last. Sau-ying and the second granduncle are unable to escape the net of justice. The imperial inspector is actually Yeuk-lan. When she drowned herself in the river, the noble master saved her. She also won an official title. Now she is found innocent, and her family is reunited. |
