内容介绍 :	Hon Ching-fan and Kong Yi-mei are lovers from the same village. Before Ching-fan leaves to study in the city, he and Yi-mei engage secretly. However, Yi-mei's superstitious mother believes that Yi-mei and Ching- fan are a poor match. She fabricates a story about Ching-fan's death, forcing Yi-mei to marry to a scholar, Law Bun-kai. Moving into the Law household, Yi-mei experiences her husband's indifference as well as the cruel treatment of the Law matriarch. Eight years later, Bun-kai's sister, Wai-ching, returns home from her studies, accompanied by none other than Ching-fan. On seeing each other once again, old emotions are rekindled. Yi-mei asks Ching -fan to elope with her but Ching-fan hesitates out of adherence to feudal propriety. On the occasion of the Law matriarch's birthday, Yi-mei becomes drunk and causes a disturbance for which she is punished by the matriarch. At the same time, the matriarch rejects the marriage of Ching-fan and Wai-ching because of superstition. An angry Ching-fan decides to run away with Yi-mei but they are caught when Wai-ching informs on them. Yi-mei is put in a bamboo cage and thrown into the river, the traditional death penalty for an adulteress. A distraught Bun-kai shoots and kills himself. Wai-ching finally turns her back on her family and leaves with Ching-fan. The matriarch is left alone to live with the tragic consequences of her feudal proprieties.
