His daughter-in-law Wang Xifeng runs the family affairs and uses up the family's cash flow for issuing usurious loans. Zheng, Xifeng and his elder daughter Yuanchun all hope that Baoyu would marry Baochai, Pan's sister, so as to secure Xue's support. Though Baoyu loves Daiyu, he is too weak in character to oppose his father. Thus, an engagement is arranged. Daiyu becomes ill when she learns of the news. Meanwhile Pan has molested Jias' maid Qingwen and is caught in the act by Xifeng, who blames Qingwen instead. Distraught, Qingwen commits suicide. On the day of Baoyu's wedding, there are big changes in the political situations of the country. The Jias and the Xues flee in panic, leaving behind the sick Daiyu. 备注 : | Based on 'Dream of the Red Chamber'Producer's comment, 'What is the difference between the old and the new versions of "Dream of the Red Chamber"? For one thing, the lifestyle of the characters is different, The original's nascent theme of anti-feudalism is now given more emphasis, and we have modernised the settings so that this anti-feudal theme can be expressed more vividly with modern techniques' (Excerpt from the film brochure) |
