内容介绍 : | Li Wenhua returns to Suzhou after graduation in Shanghai, preparing to marry his fiancee Meiyu. However, the war intervenes and Wenhua is arrested due to war activity. Meiyu is forced to marry the traitor Peter Chen for helping out her mother who is seriously ill and to sustain their living . After the war, Wenhua returns to Shanghai with his friend Zhang Yide. At this time, Meiyu is known as the social butterfly Mary. Meiyu meets Wenhua in a birthday party for Yide's wife. They get back together and become husband and wife. Because of his wife's greed and want, Wenhua absconds public funds from the department where he works. Despite Yide's pleas to Meiyu, she is unable to get off her greedy habits and decides to leave Wenhua to return to the dance hall. Wenhua goes to the dance hall to look for Meiyu and has a fight with Peter Chen. Chen takes out a gun to shoot Wenhua but Meiyu steps in front to stop the bullet. A wounded Meiyu retrieves the gun as the two men fight; she shoots Peter. As if awakened from a dream, Wenhua resolves to join hands with colleagues devoted to buiding up the country.
