内容介绍 : | Zhou Hongyuan is the son of a distinguished family in Nanjing. He falls in love with a song girl Wang Hanmei, and asks for the consent of his father, a retired head county official, to marry Hanmei. Old Master Zhou opposes the marriage. He has a nephew, Zhenting, who knows that his uncle is a womaniser. He takes Old Master Zhou to Hanmei's home to talk things over. Hanmei accords hospitality to the old man, respecting him as Hongyuan's father. Zhenting incites the old man to take Hanmei as his concubine. Hongyuan now arrives to propose to Hanmei, with money sponsored by his widowed sister-in-law Zhang Aijuan. He misunderstands that Hanmei has deserted him and storms out. Hanmei tries to explain to Hongyuan when she comes to the Zhou house for dinner, at the invitation of the old master. Zhenting also comes with a partner Jiang Xiaoying, a song girl, who is discovered to be wearing a ring that was given by the old master's late wife to Aijuan. When asked about this, Zhenting is at a loss for words. At this point, Old Master Zhou does not know there is an affair between his nephew and daughter-in-law. Next, Hongyuan makes scathing remarks about his father for taking away the woman he loves. Old Master Zhou then realises that Zhenting is trying to sow discord in the family and therefore banishes him from the house. A disillusioned Hongyuan also leaves the house by night, but is shocked to learn that his father is murdered and a knife tainted with blood is found in his luggage. Hongyuan is arrested pending trial. Aijuan, who is involved with Zhenting, confesses to the police that it was Zhenting who had murdered old master Zhou. Hongyuan is released and reunited with Hanmei. They go to thank Aijuan but only to find that she has taken poison and died with remorse. (Extracted from a newspaper synopsis) |
