内容介绍 :	Old landlord Fang has four branch families living under the same roof. The eldest son's family consists of a widow Madam Cheng, who fears that the other branches may browbeat her because she does not have a big family to cling on. She therefore devises a ruse by asking her recently widowed daughter-in-law to pretend that she is pregnant. The second son, Dakang, is a weakling, and his son Xingwei, is similarly frail, constantly suffering from illness of one kind or another. The third son, Yongkang, and his wife, Madam Xie, have only one daughter Zhuping. The fourth family consists of a widow Madam Zhou, whose 12-year-old son Xinghai, is betrothed to a child bride, Lanxiang. Yongkang, concerned that the eldest family may bear a son that will share the Fang fortune, wants a son of his own. However, his wife refuses to allow him to have a concubine. Yongkang forces the wife of a peasant Zhong Gensheng to bear him a child as collateral for the outstanding rent that Gensheng owes to the family. Gensheng's wife has no choice but to comply. When she attempts to return to her own home upon hearing that one of her eight children has fallen ill, Yongkang is enraged. Catching up with her, Yongkang vents his anger on the woman, bashing her until she has a miscarriage. Meanwhile, Madam Zhou mistreats Lanxiang. Zhuping is sympathetic to the young lady. Since Xingwei's lung problems take a turn for the worse, his father Dakang arranges a marriage for him in a hope that the joyful event may lead to his recovery. Xingwei is too weak to oppose the marriage and dies soon . Madam Cheng's ruse is exposed, leading to the suicide of her daughter-in-law. Unable to stand the oppressive sadness of the house, Zhuping decides to leave in a stormy night, taking Lanxiang with her. A ferocious wind uproots a gigantic tree outside the Fang mansion, destroying the house and killing all its residents. Only Zhuping and Lanxiang survive the disaster as they head away from the ruins towards a brighter future. (Extracted from the film novel)
