内容介绍 : | Cai Bojie, a resident of Chen Liu Village, is married to the beautiful and chaste Fifth Madam Zhao . Cai is commanded by his father to sit for the imperial examinations in the capital. He comes first in the examinations and is invited to a banquet, held by the emperor. Cai's talents are appreciated by Minister Niu, and, with the emperor as matchmaker , succeeds in marrying Cai into his family. In the same year, Chen Liu Village is stricken by famine. Zhao sells her own clothing to buy food for her parents-in-law and consumes bran herself. The parents-in-law die of illness. Zhao sells her own hair to raise the burial fee. Carrying a pipa on one arm, she sets out for the capital to look for her husband. She learns that her husband has married another woman from a minister's family. Resentful of and hating her husband, Zhao survives by working as a maid in the minister's residence. One night, Fifth Madam is playing her pipa. Its sad tunes captivate Bojie and lead him into a meeting with his wife. Joy and shock are intertwined. Bojie begins to blame himself when learning of his wife's sufferings and the deaths of his parents. Madam Niu is sympathetic to her husband's predicament, and, with no feelings of malice, allows him to be reunited with Zhao while accepting her status of concubinage. Bojie, now with his wife and concubine, form a happy family together. (Based on a newspaper synopsis) |
