内容介绍 : | Kwan Chi-fung is the son of a businessman Kwan Pak-sing. Being a company manager, Chi-fung has an unsatisfactory love life with cousin Mui Yee-wan. Chi-fung's chauffeur, Cheung Siu-kau, is a toady-eater and regularly introduces women to Chi-fung. One day, Siu-kau receives a letter from his family telling him that his mother is seriously ill. Rushing back, Siu-kau finds that the letter was a ruse to bring him back to the village so that his mother can arrange a village girl, Fong Ah-heung, to marry him. Unwilling to go through with blind marriage, Siu-kau leaves a letter in the nuptial chamber on the wedding night, and leaves. Ah-heung is deeply hurt and feels humiliated , she resolves to become self-reliant. She and her aunt leave for Hong Kong, where they work as laundry women. One day, Chi-fung catches sight of Ah-heung washing clothes by a stream, and is immediately impressed by her beauty . Next, Ah-heung returns laundry to a nightclub where she unintentionally displays her fine singing voice, leading to Manager Wong hiring her. Wong turns her into an overnight star, wowing audiences in a charity performance. To woo this new star, Siu- kau pretends to be a manager, with Chi-fung pretending to be his chauffeur. However, it is Chi-fung who wins Ah-heung's affections. When Chi-fung's father and Yee-wan learn about their affair, they call on the Fong family to admonish Chi-fung. Out of love for Ah-heung, Chi-fung is willing to leave home and live by his own efforts. His decision touches Ah-heung. Eventually, Chi-fung's mother mediates for her son and the two lovers get married. By this time, Siu-kau realises that Ah-heung is the woman he has deserted. He goes to the Kwan house to reclaim Ah-heung, but Ah-heung reminds Siu-kau of the words that he had written in the letter to her, "Both are Free to Marry." A regretful Siu-kau finally realises that he has lost Ah-heung for good. (Based on viewing of the film.) |
