内容介绍 : | Female opera performer Cheung Man-mei is in love with Wong King-hang but because of parental opposition, they go their separate ways. King-hang goes overseas to become a doctor, and bring up his son Hark-biu. A decade and more passes, King-hang and Hark-biu return to their old home. Man -mei has married the wealthy Chow Tung-cheung. Her daughter, Suk-fun, cultivates a passion for opera and is favourably disposed towards Hark-biu. Daughter of the first wife, So-fun, is also enamoured of Hark-biu, urging her father to employ the young man as a leading player. As a result of her interest in Hark-biu, So-fun maintains a lukewarm relationship with the troupe writer, Ko Chung. Hark-biu's debut on the stage is marred by stage fright, and only Man-mei's impromptu intervention saves the show. Disappointed with the stage, Hark-biu is urged by So-fun to enter university at Lujiang. King-hang dies soon after. Hark-biu is expelled from university for drunken behaviour . On Chung's recommendation, Hark-biu is accepted by a troupe as an actor which turns out to be a success. Hark-biu writes a letter to Suk-fun requesting a rendezvous, but the letter is misplaced and reaches So-fun instead. So-fun runs away from home as a declaration of love for Hark-biu. Hark-biu has no choice but to marry So-fun. Man-mei and Tung-cheung are heart-broken as a result of their daughter's elopement. Both fall ill and die. Hark-biu and So-fun return home, accompanied by Chung. Suk-fun is left all alone in the family. Disappointed that her lover has married another woman, Suk-fun resolves to renounce the world and becomes a nun. (Extracted from the film brochure.) |
