The prisoners are brought to the capital where Nai-mo's wife continues to appeal her husband's case. the minister Tung Ying petitions the Empress Dowager, who issues a command for a retrial under the auspices of the six ministries . a stratagem is worked out whereby Nai-mo and little cabbage are brought together for a last meeting before execution. Thier conversation is secretly recorded by a listening official. The truth is thus revealed. Yan-hoi and Kwai-ang receive death sentences, and other guilty parties are punished.
