内容介绍 :	During the Sino-Japanese War, Mei Chunli gives performances at the battlefront with the members of a choir. Mei later becomes ill and leaves for her elder sister in Chungking. On her way, she meets Wu Jingzi, who lusts after her beauty and flatters her a lot. After marrying her, Wu gradually exposes himself as a domineering and selfish man. He requires Mei to submit to his orders, not to have any contacts with old friends, and to stay at home all day to keep his reputation. Mei painfully feels that she seems to be a caged bird, losing her freedom. When the war is over, Wu goes with Mei to Shanghai, aiming to get into the upper class, and therefore forces his wife to sing for celebrities and the gentry. Their relationship becomes more alienated day by day, while Mei feels that a big gap exists between the values and attitudes of her and her husband. Once, she is forcibly brought home by Wu when she is enjoying a pleasant time with her sister at her farm. She desires to be an actress in a musical choreographed by a member of the choir, but is refused by Wu. In the end, Mei determines to separate from him, and to tolerate no more of his threats. She manages to get back to her sister's farm after a lot of suffering during her journey.
