For over 4,000 years, the world's tallest structure was the 480-foot-tall Great Pyramid at Giza. Next to top the list was the cathedral spire in Cologne, Germany (513 ft., built in 1880), then the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. (555 ft., 1884).
